ideas for the studio
so basically ive had a good time in the studio. things've been pretty cool. like i've done whatever i wanted to. but i'm really sure how exactly i can keep it up. i guess once you do somehting expectation gets generated. now its a matter of what do we accomplish. and then also a matter of how do we keep it up. i guess you could say ive got a bit of ceo in my brain. constantly evaluating things in that way. but through trial and error ive kinda figured out some things that work. the piano for instance sounds great. the bass can sound really good too. i've found my favorite amp. i know the snare drums the only one that sounds good. i kindof want to try an upright parade drum. but im not sure where i could get one. if i could get my hands on one that would be cool. but basically thats what i want on the recording. for the song humming. i want it to be like really big. but it was a fun song to record. and then hug came out really amazing. anita has her own moments of greatness. the music that she does on her cd. and then basically like... she has ideas to put on things on my tracks. i have a drum and bass track she wants to do stuff with. but thats just kinda interesting.

studio time
so im going to the studio sunday. we went tuesday. tuesday was a disaster. i didn't get much recorded. i was too sleepy. and anita's thing took too much time. but anita's time was worth it. it was definately a step forward. it was the best showing i've seen ever anita doing. it was pretty badass. it feels like a film soundtrack. she was on the piano. doodling around. basically i said record it. she wasn't sure. i knew it was what we needed to do. she likes pianos. she doesn't own one. whenever we go to a music store she does this. plays it for awhile. does alot of cool stuff. has a sense of fun. i wanted to capture that. it happened purely by accident. but i remember the guy from the grizzly man soundtrack. the werner herzog film. basically they had an extra thing for the making of the soundtrack. the guitarist was talking about how each performance was different. each one was unique. and thats what gave it character. i kinda believe that. anita did the same thing. it has character. something she'll never do again. not quite that way again. unless she wanted to memorize. so that's that really. she did a great job. but all my time went away. so i didn't get a chance to do a good job. the things i did sucked. i wasn't in the zone
we have the loop pedal in the car. got replaced. the old one got fucked up. somethin happened. not sure what. it just doesnt work. kinda shitty. but it did its job. for a long while. just ran its course. happens. shame though. i had it awhile. never fucked up. always reliable. but thats that. anyway. equipmentwise we brought alota stuff. guitar bass and acoustic. keyboard and pedals. and then of course lyrics. written and on laptops. plus my mind. creativety ready to go. this's the third time that we'll spend in the studio. i'm not sure how that'll go. it should be pretty badass. i've got alot to get off my chest. there's alot to say. alot to sing about. plus lots of ways to do music. lots of things i havent tried in the studio yet. lots of old songs to re-record. a couple simple tracks that can be overdubbed. new tracks to be written, either in acoustic, loop pedal, or full band. there's alot of directions to go. i'm not sure what exactly i'll decide to take it. there's alot of different genre's i'd like to explore. basically it'd be cool to do grime. but the thing is i'm not good at it. i'm not even quite sure how to do it. that comes with lack of experience. but i'm willing to give it a try. i've always been into turntabling too. like scratching and stuff. i was thinking of getting dj hero.
songwise ive written alot of words online. havent really used them for anything. at least not for the mostpart. theyre just kinda there if i need 'em. whichs kinda nice. drumwise i apparently am not as good as i used to be. they didnt have a high hat. which sucked. but i made do. i ended up taking off the drum tracks. the keyboard drums seem to work well. but the laptop beats work now thanks to cords. i guess the stuff needs to be grounded. it takes away all the hiss. i havent done anything yet with hammerhead beats. theyre super easy to use. probably way easier to use than a click track. so i might just start makin those. the click is also super loud too. but its cool how the headphones work. adjust each thing for each track. makes it easier to play to. its also nice that all the instruments are there. i just kinda wish shit wouldn't take so long to do. at least on the engineers side. he takes awhile to set shit up. i know its pretty complicated. but it would be nice if he had shit set up before we got there. the piano sounds really good. so that might be something to take advantage of. but yeah. i dont really write piano music. but i do have a couple keyboard songs. thing is i dont really have rewire anymore. which made all my best beats. which sucks. but oh well. i can get by.
there's alot of topics i can draw from. the songtitles in the book are a starting point. officially band names they can be used in different ways. its cool to have that really. tuesday was the first time i felt like i was using audacity. it was pretty cool. kinda got shit done. not bad really. got used to using the setup. and not shy about telling the guy what to do. thats probably the best way to do it. otherwise youre just kinda like wasting your time. youve gotta try hard to get shit done. you dont have much time. times expensive. and then when its up youve gotta go. its usually never when you want it. but thats how it usually works. and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. but i definately wish i could have indefinate time in a studio. i wish it didnt cost so much. i think all i need is a soundproof booth. big enough for drums. with perhaps controls inside. something that says stop recording and start it. maybe the ability to change tracks. the actual pc would somewhere else. that keeps it easy. otherwise youre kinda screwed. so i have alot of old tracks i can fuck with. but the question is what do i want to do. im not entirely sure. i wouldn't mind having a dhol player. but they're hard to find. so that's that really. but if i could find one it would be cool.
genre wise i dont even know what to call myself. i was talking to a roadie yesterday. she makes as much as the band. she books their tours. and she rides in busses with about ten or twenty people. she was riding with the band since she was ten. i thought that was kinda crazy. you wouldnt expect afterall someone to do something like that. but thats her life i guess. she's a lesbian. so she says. she said i should just sign myself to a label. and after that promote myself. i guess you can hire promoters. people who can book your gigs for you. and then you have to pay the venues for the shows. you pay your studio for the album. and then you pay your tour manager for booking it. but yeah. ive only done one paying gig. anitas only been my tour person. never hired anyone. ive talked about managers before. i guess i dont need that. i dont know. but it might be nice to have one. i guess they do the hard work. while you focus on the music. they take their cut but they do their fair share of work. im not sure if theyre worth having but they might be. i heard that alot of people will screw you over. i was hearing stories from the girl yesterday. she was saying there are alot of people in columbus who are untrustworthy. that was just kinda stupid to experience.

there's alot of topics i can draw from. the songtitles in the book are a starting point. officially band names they can be used in different ways. its cool to have that really. tuesday was the first time i felt like i was using audacity. it was pretty cool. kinda got shit done. not bad really. got used to using the setup. and not shy about telling the guy what to do. thats probably the best way to do it. otherwise youre just kinda like wasting your time. youve gotta try hard to get shit done. you dont have much time. times expensive. and then when its up youve gotta go. its usually never when you want it. but thats how it usually works. and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. but i definately wish i could have indefinate time in a studio. i wish it didnt cost so much. i think all i need is a soundproof booth. big enough for drums. with perhaps controls inside. something that says stop recording and start it. maybe the ability to change tracks. the actual pc would somewhere else. that keeps it easy. otherwise youre kinda screwed. so i have alot of old tracks i can fuck with. but the question is what do i want to do. im not entirely sure. i wouldn't mind having a dhol player. but they're hard to find. so that's that really. but if i could find one it would be cool.
genre wise i dont even know what to call myself. i was talking to a roadie yesterday. she makes as much as the band. she books their tours. and she rides in busses with about ten or twenty people. she was riding with the band since she was ten. i thought that was kinda crazy. you wouldnt expect afterall someone to do something like that. but thats her life i guess. she's a lesbian. so she says. she said i should just sign myself to a label. and after that promote myself. i guess you can hire promoters. people who can book your gigs for you. and then you have to pay the venues for the shows. you pay your studio for the album. and then you pay your tour manager for booking it. but yeah. ive only done one paying gig. anitas only been my tour person. never hired anyone. ive talked about managers before. i guess i dont need that. i dont know. but it might be nice to have one. i guess they do the hard work. while you focus on the music. they take their cut but they do their fair share of work. im not sure if theyre worth having but they might be. i heard that alot of people will screw you over. i was hearing stories from the girl yesterday. she was saying there are alot of people in columbus who are untrustworthy. that was just kinda stupid to experience.

thinking about making it
so the pursuit in music has always been money. for me anyway. i really look back fondly on the times i spent with vivek. those few months i had a band with damien were great. the day i had a standing ovation was amazing. and the many shows ive done with anita have been great. i guess you could say i need music. i used to learn recorder in england. violin and keyboard at qegs. singing hymns from the yellow books. watching people at the local temple. being in chicago and standing and singing. learning the harmonium and the tabla. these are my memories. we learned shabads even though we didn't know the meaning. even singing songs in heathfield. this is like from preschool on. in ohio getting the trombone. getting the guitar. the trombone was because of a girl. picking up that godzilla cd. and that poorly chosen snoop dogg cd. getting the soundtrack for little nicky. picking up led zeppelin 4. led zeppelin 1. getting rush 2112. human clay by creed. the beatles. these were all cd's i was given. the highschool years. going over to allan daugnheimers and being shown blink 182. these were the sounds that explained my condition. radiohead in highschool. coldplay on the radio.
as i went to college, i downloaded. many new bands. many new styles. bloc party. interpol. iron and wine. ever more diverse in their style. it was all very cool. so im definately a fan of listening to music. and im also a fan of playing it. ive been on many stages. ive recorded two albums. three really. two and a half. the second one got botched. what with the death. the first was in highschool. a project for immersion. the third one with anita in central city. a stab back at the old style. but music is definately in me. i travel with a guitar. it gets used. we do open mics. they're not bad. we meet people through them. these people aren't all bad. but i've written words. i've gotten really into writing words. and i've written many songs. i've been into writing music for a long time. right now i need to get a new pedal for my setup. it broke at a show. it costs alot. i got two but asked my mom to return them. im gonna go out and buy it again. i guess you could say i want a band. i would love to learn turntables. over time ive developed my identity as a writer. the lyrics specifically. im still all over the place with music. i love listening to music. when it comes to playing i love it too. but ive made up so many its hard to remember the tunes. and i need to memorize them for shows.
but music is just a joy to do. i used to think that it was a bad thing. something that kept me isolated in the basement. i kinda feel like thats more to do with my parents now. but it was a way to communicate. and over the years i got alot of stuff off my chest. so i guess thats that. i dont know what i want with my music. i dont know if i want to be famous. ive read about how it can be bad. i feel like im in the wrong part of the world. my kinda music gets played in the city. the midwest doesnt support it. im really british in my music. ive got the passport to go there. but i dont know what i'd do. maybe we could try and go there as a working band. that would be interesting. im not sure how they would recieve me there. but it would be something to check out. a friend of mine from Heathfield has a band. she actually became very successfull. i was very impressed when i found out. we'll see though. i guess we need a band name. i dont wanna be called deganwy's lost son anymore. at least thats what i thought in boston. i guess while im in beavercreek it suits me just fine. but the identity changes as i leave. interesting how that works, huh? but i wanna do another album while im here. to keep things rolling. keep building. and keep moving forward
central city does a good deal. 250 dollars 8 hours. you can do alot in 8 hours. i did 3 cd's. that was alot of fun. i really do wanna be famous with music. i think it would be pretty awesome. thats what me and vivek worked for back in the day. we both really wanted to make it alot. we would roam around the streets of columbus and try to get shows and gigs. we did lots of open mics and we tried to form bands. but i think columbus is too small to form a band in. but they do have good deals on recording. we used to get into different parties and stuff. we played a show for a guy that i had met like once. it was all excitement in those days. vivek was always into the next new thing. and i was kindof along for the ride. and it was a glorious momentus ride. he taught me so much about recording. about the enthusiasm for music. about how to sit down and write a song. we would sit with our guitars for many hours. i would sit with mine with lauren and damien and rob. my time in the corridors of mvs. those wayward jams with paul. my time with the jazz ensemble. the night owl show. my senior recidal. the cd i worked on. showing people my work in college. playing through the talent show.

myspace #1
jasons band
i think it just sounds depressing. and very uptight too. like he seems like he's got deep issues. and he's just trying to get them vented through his music. which i think it just kinda rediculous. he's not putting anything out positive. like vivek used to put out positive stuff. but this is just like depressing. i think that music thats depressing shouldnt be put out. because all youre doing is spreading your misery. music is supposed to be something that celebrates something. in a way this just comes across as emo. i don't care what other name they give it, it's pretty much emo. what's your take on that?
This is what the guy i keep telling you about would call irresponsible music. It's not a good thing to spread a bad vibe. It's kinda like counterproductive. Like if you imagine you're in charge of a bunch of people. And you just decide fuck 'em all I'm just going to be depressed. Like look at Obama. He gets alot of criticism but he still gets up in the morning and does his job with a straight face. Like he continues to try and inspire people around the world. The point is, there's a responsible way to do shit, and there's an irresponsible way to do shit. Do shit the wrong way and you can really poison the well. You wanna make sure you're making a postive contribution to society. Like Sigur Ros does. Sigur Ros is probably the most responsible band that i know of in modern times. Music you can take your kids to listen to. Like most people in Iceland really like Sigur Ros. Because that land is basically there to express their love for their country. But its not nationalistic, its something that can translate to any country. Because they're kindof just celebrating the Icelandic vibe.
Like it just sounds miserable. The voice especially. Like it has the possibility to be better but the voice kills it.
Jasons new band
It sounds completely different. Here's my theory. Jason was basically trying to be vivek. and it just was making him miserable. because he can't be vivek, he needed to let him go, but instead he tried to become him. and i think with this band it sounds like he's finally starting to let him go. its much more chilled out and emotional.
It's kinda sad again to be honest. When he gets other people to collaborate with him it sounds more positive. Like this you basically can tell how its meant to be. Jasons a backup musician he's not a singer. He's still singing too much. He sings twice as much as the girl. He needs to cut that down alot. because he's already doing the guitar drums and bass. The problem is if he doesn't collaborate nad play in a band he's just not playing music. Like it has this possibility of being good. But i think he kicks his own song down at certain points.
It basically sounds like rockabilly. I think Jason actually feels happy being a backup musician. I just feel like im listening to someone's dysfunctional like... uh... distraction from their own problems. I don't really feel like listening to that.

"I agree with the emo crap. I don't like listening to his music either. It's just... the only reason I knew it was his music is because it sounded so shitty. Like uh, as far as the happy vibe goes that isn't even there. It's all just depression."

the trouble with tuesdays
club passim:
there's this club that has an open mic, you have to pay 'em five dollars to play. isn't that a ripoff. and they also only let you play two songs. they offer to record you a cd of your songs for an extra price. its rediculous. boston has so many shitty open mics. but the real rediculous thing is how many people still go to it. if this thing is right, 60 people show up for it. because its free to members, and i have no idea how their member scheme works. but im sure members will take advantage of that. it would cost 10 bucks for us. so apparently its like a 50 year old place. like it played a role in the folk scene inthe 60s. bob dylan tried to play there for free. and apparently they refused to let bruce springsteen play. bob dylan had to play for free because they weren't willing to pay him. apparently its 60 to 100 dollars to be a member there. if youre a student you can be one for 35 bucks but you cant without ID. this place just kinda seems like a money factory. they're so greedy they even go to a 2,500 dollar level. if you get that you get free access to all shows and stuff. but it's like... that just seems to me like highway robbery. i can't believe they even have this on a website. like this just shows how shitty and how low people in boston are. you cant charge peopel 2500 bucks for an open mic. neither can you charge 'em a 100 bucks. i think its because they think its historical so they think they can get money out of them. but thats a disgusting mentality to have over something as open as an open mic. and i can't believe that guy over there in that store reccomended this place to us. i think its one massive network of people who are trying to rip you off. its just disgusting to see so many greedy people in the music scene. over in columbus this is unheard of. i hate to say it but thats just another reason columbus is better. its just shit. its like blood money. and theyre going and wringing it out of artists. they have the least money and theyre getting them to pay more money. higher rent and higher price for the artists? i feel like spitting on the window of this place. there's your membership fee.
The Burren
here's another stupid open mic. so, first of all, its in somerville. in davis square. so im not even sure we could get there on public transport. but once we get there, and we have to get there at 5pm, there's no guarentee when you're gonna play. because... guess what. they draw your name out of a fucking hat. its not show up early and get signed up early, its show up and whatever time you show up, thats basically when they draw the names out of the hat, and they basically do that shit. i hate all the stupid gimmicks they do out here.
The Rosebud
this one doesn't look bad. like there's no fee that i can see. but it does start at 8pm. and it is in somerville. but i don't think they have any hat thing. which's good 'cause i don't want any of that nonsense. the only thing im not sure about is it says its run by miss genevieve. which sounds like a sketchy ass name. i imagine some fantasy obsessed white chick, or like a real big chubby black chick. either one of those is going to be weird. why call yourself "miss" genevieve. just use your name. but its 15 minutes. she says contact me for your time. im guessing thats at the actual mic, and not like, before, which basically thats the feeling i get, when i read how she wrote that. so maybe she's also an idiot.
Paddy O's
so this one sounds stupid too. its in boston. it might be at park station. but it starts at 8. now... the thing thats weird is this is the berklee spot. this's where people go from their school. so i don't really necessarily want to have anything to do with these berkley people. because... all the jazz and nonsense is just not my style. plus this isn't a regular open mic this is a jam. which means we couldn't play a single one of our songs. which's absolutely shitty. so that's not gonna work.

speeding up music #2
kings of leon - aha shake heartbreak
the guitar sounds awesome. but the bass is repetative. the drums kindof sound boring. but the guitar is definately awesome. the vocals aren't even that great. the guitar is the best part of this band. that's probably why i like 'em. they give you alot of like good inspiration. there's alot of parts that're entirely around the guitar. you can tell they write their songs around the guitar. i think the guy doesn't even write his lyrics until the guitar parts done. i mean the guy had a couple good spots with his singing but it was mostly guitar. they like repetative shit. again the guitar is the reason this song sounds good. the drum isnt even good. the bass is repetative. and the vocals are just kinda thrown on top. if it wasnt for the guitar player they'd suck completely. it's interesting that a band is so one-dimensional. like the drummer and the bass player and the singer all base their shit off the guitar. the drums are sometimes good. but the guitar is the main thing in this band. the lead and the rhythm guitar together. they're like a great combo. the bass player just sounds depressed. but the guitar is like so fresh. thats why i like it alot. and the singers not even that good. these are like my guitar heroes i guess you could say. like they inspire me in my own stuff. like really this is badass guitaring. like the lead guitar? and even the rhythm guitar in the background. the drummer and the bass player just dont seem to get it. and the singer doesnt seem to get it either. the guitar is kinda shitty. but the bass and drums are always shitty. the guitars what makes it interesting. and all the singer does is get raspy and shit but he doesn't do anything good. it's like only the guitarist that does anything good. it's just annoying. bands where one person does everything annoy. like when everyone relies on one person to be good. the rest of the band sucks. like not a single one of them could stand on their own two feet. but the guitar is way better. the bass player is just so simple in what he plays. its just not hard to play. probably could figure it out in five seconds. its three notes. this is kendall style music. you just need to take the guitar out so it doesnt sound cool. it doesnt even sound that cool. the guitar is what sounds anything near badass in this band. great guitar parts. everythings fucking repetative surrounding the guitar. like this would sound good just vocals and guitar. the guitar like jumps out. but i think it would be cool if they performed the entire album electric guitar and vocals. and fuck the drums and fuck the bass. they just hide the goodness of the guitar. and the guitar's easily the best part of this band. it's just so good. can you see how it inspires me? do you ever hear me stuff that sounds like this? 'cause i've got a great example here of how to do it. this reminds me of pete doherty. but the drums are so shitty. and the bass is so shitty too. it just ruins the music. it would be better without the bass and the drums. its a shame that this band doesn't have a better drummer and bass player. i'd love to hear just the guitars and the vocals and see how that sounded. that's so sweet. if you listen to it you can tell they go back and forth. and the vocals are so stupid. they don't even mean anything. like the only reason i like this band is because of the guitars. guitars are so awesome. they're almost like... mod punk. its like mod punk meets like rockabilly. but only the worst parts of rockabilly. like the stupid repetative drums and the stupid repetative bass. but i mean its not bad. because of the guitars though. like what the guitars are doing its so far ahead of any other band. like it reminds me of the first time i heard bloc party. 'cause i used to be a hardcore guitarist. so thats why i liked bands with like... hardcore guitar players. but like the more i became more of a singer, thats when sigur ros started to appeal to me. see to me sigur ros is like the singer band, and like, kings of leon is the guitar band. like if you took those guitar riffs from kings of leon put them with like sigur ros vocals, you'd have a pretty good combination there, maybe with like massive attack drums. that'd be a pretty cool combination wouldn't it? maybe that'll be a band i put together one day. the guitars so good. like without it these songs would suck. its all about how finesse the guitar is. like i'd love to find out who the guitarist is for this band. they do a badass job at what they do. there's the fucking annoying bass player. repetative shit. see how much better it sounds without the drums? the singer isn't even that good though. his impulses are shitty. fire him and hire jonsi. jonsi's the lead singer for sigur ros. yeah fire this guy. he sqawks like a fucking parrot. another repetative drum and bass song. see take the guitarist from this band and put 'em in sigur ros. that'd be a fucking badass pair. they're wasted in this band. all they do is add little bits and bobs to the guitar part. and they're nothing significant either. like i think it'd be cool to get two guitarists, maybe i can sing, and just cover this album with just electric guitars and me. or maybe it'll just be instrumental kings of leon. no vocals. just two guitars. electric. and we'll cover the whole album. that would be pretty fucking cool. better than this shit. its like taking the guitarists and highlighting that shit. these guys just needa fire their drummer and bass player. they do nothing but destroy the songs.
sigur ros - meo suo i eyrum vio spilum endalaust
sigur ros is the music of people hiding. it's soothing for sure but i think its also the ultimate hideaway music. there's something about it which really seems to kinda take hold whilst you're listening. like you're just sitting there and thinking ot yourself... hmm, this is brilliant. and that's the thing about these guys. they're really simple with what they do but the emotions of jonsi certainly overpower most of the other elements of the stuff. if you think about it its kinda like Slow-core orwhatever you want to call that genre, if you speed their things up to about 2 or 3 times the original speed you have something that sounds like a symphony. which to me is interesting.

speeding up music
Gorillaz - Demon Days
gorillaz sounds like shit. like there's nothing good there. its just really annoying. and just really repetative too. i dont see how anyone could really like that. its just like annoying almost. like its a guy trying to do popular music but its shitty. i never did like this album and i can see why now. but this is the band you said was awesome. so i dont think i can really trust that. It's just really shitty. I just don't see why anyone would listen to this. But i guess i can see why he does stuff with african musicians. But this isn't really my style. Like i would never record something like this. And be satisfied by it. It's really not that great. But isnt it funny thiat this has alot of fans around the world. This is Demon Days. Demon Days by fucking Gorillaz. The Gorillaz. You're the one who brought them up to me. And they suck. They're just a bunch of noise and nonsense. It's so shitty. This is not even real music. That's really annoying. This just proves that they're gimmicky. That sounds kinda cool. But I don't like the drums. And that bass sucks so much. And the rapping is so shitty too. The only part he's good at is the singing. And not the repetative shit. The drums are so crappy. I can't believe this guy got famous ever. Like its just so shitty. This is like one of his supposedly best albums too.
Massive Attack - 100th Window
That sounds awesome. Cause its got alot of sound to it. That sounds really cool too. These guys know how to make music. Like it just sounds really soothing. And it makes it interesting to speed it up. And they do great beats too. They're so much better than Gorillaz. Like Gorillaz beats are shitty. These are just like elaborate and badass. Like this part right here is one of my favorites. And speeding it up makes it more interesting. Like it works with this kinda music. This is Massive Attack. They're an old English band. They started trip-hop. Which's like a genre. But I just think that it sounds so elaborate. And they're patterns too, they're not just random. So for me it's just badass. It's funny how it sounds just as good this fast. Lets see how this one does. That sounds awesome. Really badass. That's sweet. Although it is kindof twisted. I'll definately admit that. Like... someone... written by someone insane. It doesn't seem quite right... in the head. It's kindof off. And i guess thats why it sounds shitty. It's just like... basically bread and butter trippy music. And sometimes its good and sometimes it sucks. It's like they're trying to make trippy music so they're not going to make a good song on purpose. But all they're doing is shimmery two chords back and forth. And thats not the hardest thing in the world. They shimmer it and add effects and it makes it sound trippy. And here's another two chord song. And that's kindof alright. But it's not the best thing in the world. I love the vocals. But you can tell its really well done. But its also like... very artistic... very artsy... like existential philosophers and shit. Like i wouldn't call this trip hop... i'd call this experimental music. It's basically just experimental music slowed down. And it's not even good at every part. The voice is definately good. But this song it reminds me of some of the shit I did when I was younger. And it also reminds me of experimental musicians. Like basically out there stuff that is designed to make you think weird. That's basically what this is all about. Probably has the same effect on people as religion. But in a different way. Some of it sounds like noise. They're way too repetative in alot of their songs. Although I like how they change it up a little bit. But they just go back to the same shit again after they change it up. And the synthesizers are so loud. Like they're basically raping your ears with synths. They use cool drums. Sometimes. But they're all about the shimmery shit and like massive synth. Really loud. Really simple. To me good music has to be listened to at any speed. See another massively loud synth. The drums on this one aren't that good. Just repetative and annoying. But the voice is awesome. I don't like how the chords are repetative. It kindof makes the music not as cool. It kindof ruins their songs to have the same two chords every song. But they still have some cool parts every now and then. If they made more chords and they kept the better beats it would be better. They have good ideas with the vocals, and then they have parts where single notes do really cool parts. It's kindof like a retarded orchestra. Where they can only do two chords. But they have an amazing soloist or something. That just sounds weird. But that sounds really awesome too. But you can see how they're purposely trying to make it trippy. The two chord thing kinda sucks.
Spacehog - Resident Alien
see spacehog seem to be a band where they just copy other people. theyre so focused on copying other people that they dont make good music. they dont focus on the music they focus on imitation. and thats their weakpoint. when they arent just being themselves. so i guess a lesson from these guys is be yourself. because theyre a good bunch of people but they didnt make good music. and thats basically why theyre called one hit wonders. you have to do your own thing and thats what you use to make your music. otherwise if youre consumed by wanting to imitate youll never really see your full potential.

reviewing anita's demos
whats that smell -
i can't even hear it. it sounds interesting. what little i can hear. but it needs to be much louder
- make it louder
- since it sint loud ca't hear the words youre saying
la da da da da da5
right off the bat i like what im haering. like youve got a clear guitar part that sounds awesome. and then the vocals are cool. it sounds very 80s, until you start singing. and then the vocal w/ the guitar sounds twee together. like fragile etc. like antsy pants etc. this is an awesome song.
this is good:
1- cause its catchy
2- your voice sounds awesome
3- the feel is really deep / good
what could make it better
1- play it live @ an open mic
2- maybe record it @ a studio
3- and to do those maybe practice it more
3- and to do that maybe write out lyrics
although around 2:47 it starts to get boring. maybe you need something new to keep it interesting because otherwise it just kinda... well its kinda boring to my ears. maybe you could add something there to change it up a bit and that'll help maintain interested
so problems
1- around 2:47 it gets boring, and almost gives you a headache to listen to, because its not really giving the listener enough to kinda listen to.
from 2:47 to 4:01
idea2
this's just vocals at first. kinda doesn't really turn into anything, so it's not really a song, more like an intro to one. kinda like an ... atmospheric thing hwich is a huge insult to any musician as you want to be front and center.
just got off the bus
spoken word / sung. this ones kinda soft. but its interesting. it kinda sucks since there's no music. and hte recording is so soft that the hiss is louder than the words
so criticism
#1 - there's no music
#2 - the vocals are recorded very soft
#3 - 'cause o #2, hiss is loud and makes voice hard to hear
but...
these are basically just stopping me from hearing the performance better. so figure out maybe a way to record your stuff so that the details get saved better.
his birthday's today
this's a good one, really alot of structure, and definately has alot of potential. you've got alot there to work with, and it can totally be built up into a full-band song. there's one thing i don't like that you do with your voice but you onlydo it once, but so far @ 1:08 its mostly good. hah i like the part where you go "but its way past noon". 1:27 starting to get boring, because the music isn't like... varied enough. i think your stuff needs more varied music behind it. but i think thats mainly due to the mandolin being kinda like, repeated and not having as much thought put into it as the vocals. i think this song needs more varied backing music to meet the complexity of the lyrics. 2:14 - im gonna make it for him, kinda cool. and then ... kinda drifts in and out at parts but i think you need like... a more in depth music part. but i think this is one of your best ones.
strong points:
- catchy, and for the first min or so the mando + vox do it justice
- has potential, can be made into a band song, and put onto an album / sung live
weak points:
- gets boring after awhile @ like the 2nd minute
-
Bye Bye
is awesome. i'd say that's track #3. but you could definately see the need for like backing music i'd say. i mean im not a fan of just sung vox w/o music unless its got enough depth to it, so like, either pour yourself more int othe vox, to make it standalone, or add an instrument to make it complimented and something thats fun to listen to, with a beat, and a groove. that'd give someone a chance to dance to it. but like, around 1:55, it gets boring again, like, you seem to like, lose steam around there. and it just feels like you lose all energy in your song by that point. i think if you sang this with more heart for longer, that the song might just generally soundbetter. when it sounds like youd ont even want to sing it then it makes it sound shitty. because thats how people efel when they listen to it.
hear that clicking1
way too slow for me first off. i feel like the chords have alot of potential. like i could turn this into a band song easy because of htat minor chord specifically that you start with, very poppy,a nd that means i immediately have drum / guitar / bass ideas, and maybe even backing vocals. so in that sense, this is a very good candidate for perhaps me to modify. but i can already see @ 1:47 that its 7:56 long, and it might be... boring halfway through especially if im guessing right you'll use the same chrod progression the whole way. one important thing w/ stuff is you have to change things around enough to keep peoples attention. actually, this keeps my attention even @ 2:35, and it seems like there you start playing double the speed on the keyboard, and im not really liking the direction you took with the music, but of course, your vocals, theyre just fine, like the decisions you make w/ your vocals are good ones, but the music decisions, well, theyre goo,d and @ 3:14 you start doing an extra bass on the keyboard, which makes it sound like a bit emo but also a little bit like a disney song, but its cool. you have good natural impulses, like you know its cool to make parts sound dramatic, some parts sound soft, etc, but its like, i think maybe youd ont have the skill yet in the instruments to pull them off as well as you want, 4:06 so youve kept my interest, but i think after the first listen there might not be enough to drive me to listen through teh whole way. im not sure. this might be an exception, where your lyrics are really compelling me to listen to it. i think thats the thing you have to consider, whats compelling people to lsiten to whatyou're doing. 4:54 i think you've kinda run out of steam here. like, its still going, but it feels like youre milking the chord progression for all it has. and now youre not even singing words, but more woah woahs, and wah ah ah ah, and ooo's, so those're cool, but i think the keyboard repeated progression kills your song alot, because it just keeps repeating. it's at 5:50 now and its still not changed the progression. this is the major weakness in your stuff. you don't do any changes of chords. yous tick to the same progression the whole way through. and when you do it for 7:56, its just too much. honestly i think around the 1:30 point you've kinda milked it out for all it can do, like now at the 6:34 mark im just almost getting irritated still listening to the same chords over and over. you have to give the listener changes so that they have constantly fresh things to listen to so theyre pleased. this song kinda just abuses your listeners, and they have to put up with the repeated chords to lsiten to your words, which are good. so once you hear the words, i think there might not be much reason to listen to this again. the reason being that the repeated chords for now its been over 7:32 just torture the listener.
test1
so far its just keyboard. which is ok. its a nice small part, which i think with guitar + bass + vocals it could sound cool. but alone its just an idea. but i guess thats why you called it test. its not like a complete song in my mind.
love me
so far only lyrics. no mandolin, no keyboard. no rhythm. now spoken word / sung word accapella appeals to some people, but you have to remember that its like a niche thing, and unless you sing a well known song or that sort, its hard for an audience to pay attention. with that said, i know this song has alot of potential. so its like, a half finished idea i'd say, but you still need alot more before this is ready to be recorded in the studio. i could easily come up with those parts that are not yet written, if you want. but thats basically where you generally say no and just keep your ideas hidden and unused. just saying.
and we march4
sounds kinda repetative, and doesnt help that basically those two higher notes hurt my ears hah. and its just keyboard, no vocals, so this isnt a song so much as it is an idea. but at 00:58 you do a walkdown and something interesting. keep walking down. its interesting. so now it almost becomes a song. like at 1:14 youre now doing something interesting here as well. but then at 1:23 you seem to change your idea. but then at 1:30 its something new again and its cool, although the last is minor not major which kinda makes you wince a bit. then at 1:49 you do a walkdown that sounds kinda cool. and then a scale at 1:59 which sounds cool. and then at 2:11 you come up with a sick bass part. and repeat it. so i think this might be my favorite jam of you on the keyboard of what you've given me. 2:35 still sounds good, with the break you do. this to me is an example of some of your better instrument work.
little birdie
the words arent bad, but you kinda leave it to the listener to kinda fill in the blanks without any music. but, given that its short, it comes across as charming, and not oppressive. although even at the 00:46 point, it seems a bit dragging. but it comes across as a nursery rhyme. kinda interesting. but in the end not one of my favorites of your stuff on this cd.
keys2
so immediately im a bit worried because its 8 minutes. but the intro is interesting for sure, although im scared youre going to repeat the whole thing for 8 minutes. dude, youre even yawning when you play it. take that as a sign, if it bores you, then it'll probably bore me. at 1:02 your voice takes more interest to it, like youve got the ability to sing in a way that kinda keeps people interested. ithiknmaybe youve got skills in your voice that you havent yet learned to control. but when you do 'em theyre cool. 1:45 - im so tired wont you come by me, that was an idea. but i feel like im listening to a jam session. which kinda turns me off. like i feel like you didnt put work into this to make it sound good, you just recorded something quick and gave it to me, without trying to make it sound good.
take a breath of fresh air 2
another vocals only song. like ive said alot, your vocals are fine, but without music backing it its just kidna weird to listen to. although ill say so far 30 seconds in youve got it pitch perfect so that makes this stand out. but still youve gotta realize that if you want people to just listen to your voice then youve gotta enunciate, like i cant understand half of the words youer singing. thats accomplishable by just taking the time to try and like, properly pronounce every letter and stuff. hard T's, S's, C's, etc.
ponies in my locket rehearsal8me
this sounds cool. there's mandolin + lyrics. and the chords actually change, which is even better. so im liking this already alot more than alot of your other stuff. and the vocals are varied in how you sing them. 00:58. starts to get old. like it needs to be more varied, or maybe just needs to be sung with energy. because otherwise you strum it in a way that just sounds kinda annoying. i think this is generally one of yoru problems, halfway through the song the energy dies and it kinda loses interest. but i think the thing is that halfway through its kinda like wow, this is a cool song, but halfway through you realize, oh, thats it? and then you have to sit through a repetition. like i would like it alot more if we had alot to look forward to even when the song was halfway done. its good to repeat, and your repeats keep it interesting until about the 50 second mark for some, 1:30 for others. but youve gotta kinda maybe tackel the problem of how things can seem a bit boring after that because its just repeating the chord progression.
we're so sad 4
vocals, i think youre like copying a gospel singer almost. im not sure if thats your real voice, but youve got so many, im not sure whichs your voice you actually like to use. like when you say sad, you pronounce it weirdly. and then there's like no... guitar stuff, or mandolin stuff backing it. but then i guess because of the way that you sing it, it kinda gets itneresting. but again like 1:09 you lose it by doing the hoo hoo hoo's, and it just kinda loses the feeling. i wonder if its that you just fall apart after the halfway point. youre confident the first half and then youre not so much when you start the 2nd half.
and we march3
immediately i like the drum + keyboard combo, it's my style. but the vocals arent quite what i'd do. lets see what you do with this. im not really liking this. like the da- dadada- dadada- dadadadadada is just super repeated. i guess i hate super repeated stuff. and the keyboard doesnt really - "as we march @ 1:11 " to the sea. thats awesome. yes we march. come with me. this is all good. and we march. to the sea. this is really awesome. when you get right to it. yes we march. come with me. e-e-e-e, come with me. march with me. by my side. come with me. - so basically the lessons from that is dont just start a song with oo's, you need ot hook people with something, and you did, with as we march, but you did oo'sbefore, and those were just boring. i think you did some good things here. of course the instrumental part after, seems too long. like you shoulda gone back to as we march again. and now it seems like infinate repeat of your keyboard part...
little brother -
singing, no mandolin, no keyboard. again, not a hge fan of soft sung vocals with hiss louder than your voice. main problem is you cant hear what youre doing. but its just annoying to listen to as well, as the hiss hurts your ears. and then also how like, there's no mandolin, no keyboard, its just not as varied as some of your other stuff. its really simple i'd say. and i guess once you've listened to your complicated stuff, its hard to listen to the simple stuff. and then again at the 1:10 mark, haflway point, you seem to in your voice take on this feeling of fear, and tension, growing, which kinda spoils the recording.
ideathing 3
the intro rocks of course. 00:11 still cool. 00:18 still cool. 00:21 still cool. :0026. 00:30 kinda getting boring. 00:33, boring now. 00:39 boring... its cool but you do it too long. certain things can only be done so long, as they're gimmicky and flashy, but little substance. so with those gimmicky flashy things, use sparingly.
the father of my own
another vocal thing. it almost sounds likeit cuol dbe sung celtically. but there's emotion, agani, the vocals are recorded so softly that you can hardly hear anything. i hate pure vocal recordings without music.
let me hear your voice
keyboard, organlike, 00:17, kinda boring. -0:22 you do it again, starting with la's, and stuff. no real words yet at 00:37. same chords. this is just horrible. 00:51. no words yet. chords getting cooler though. 1:02 really boring as you use that one chord so much. 1:10 really boring, and still no words. i can't listen to this
fucking came out of nowhere1
another vox only song...
idea3
another hoo hoo hoo thing without words... use the hoos and la's after you've built a song. hook them with a good word. and then you speak but the recording was done so softly nothing comes up. record yourself better. fix that, so that i can actually hear you.
wicker frames
another vox w/o music.
keys1
30 minutes... way too long. keep your ideas to like, 1:30, or so. to keep interesting. and if they are good, then we can stretch them out.
i can't even hear it. it sounds interesting. what little i can hear. but it needs to be much louder

Re: Jimmy's drunk friend's comments on Me and GF
so this guy at a bar tells me how to play. says my singings not quite right, until he hears it used in a punk setup. literally tells me "dude you sing badly". i mean what the fuck. you know? and then even goes so far as to say "dude your songs have no structure". i mean come the fuck on. get the fuck of, and get the fuck out. you cant fucking tell me how to do my shit. i mean... this is pure conservative shit bottom line. we have the freedom & right to compose in whichever way we chose. this guy simply doesnt seem to get it. he's like "who're you playing for". and when i said myself of course, he was like, "well there's your problem." and im just thinking... what a fucking motherfucker. music is art, if you treat it like that. for this guy, music is work, and not art. i make art, not laborious copycat shit. he and jimmy were on stage just playing nonsense in front of a crowd of drunken bums, and surprise surprise they loved it. but yeah... i was just like... what the fuck is this. the 88 has degraded into something horrible. and then to get accosted by a guy saying my music is the shit bit. ill have you know we've gotten great reviews by alot of open mics. winning over the guys at andymans was a huge feat. but then also at rumba we had the crowd into it. but i mean... its just like... this guy... i guess i can't take criticism. but i wasn't ready for criticism either. like... look at me. i don't feel like playing, becausethis guy filled my ears with poison. i really only need to be concerned with me and my art, not these fuckers who come up and naysay it. if they dont get it, then dont buy it, fucker. but the way that gyu was talking, i dont think i really wanted him to either hhe. and his condescending manner, trying to "tell me how it is". itsl ike dude, i get it, you dont like it, but dont try and fucking convince me you have "the truth" and ive "got it wrong". thats just fucking fallacy-full of idiotic contrivancies. just step the fuck back and don't bother speaking. the dude... trying to say our music was "too difficult" to apply a guitar track to. because it had "no structure". hah, but then it didn't end there, he even went so far as to say i was "talking too much" for him to get it. i mean... seriously. what a fucking rediculous piece of shit. i wonder though if jimmy talked to his friend about us not giving him a ride. looking back, he must have. and then the guy basically was at our throats after basically before not really caring. but yeah. one friend trying to battle back against another guy for a second friend. it worked, but not because he was good, but instead, because i was so weak in my confidence over my work. i mean its something i havent done much, and like, the last thing you want when you go on stage is to feel doubt. like, i make a whole gig out of just not caring about other peoples opinoins and shit, just putting my shit out there, and then winning fans that way. because people appreciate you for what you are. and if they dont, they leave. and its that simple. its about being open minded enough to accept something challenging and good into your hearts. i like putting out challenging work. if you dont get it, maybe you need to go watch another fucking... star trek. but as is, my stuff isnt that weird to bgin with, im just doing beats, words, how hard is it to imagine someone does beatlesesque vocal harmonies. and then to call what i do math rock. dude, i'd call you a drunk cock. he called jazz his bane and metal his home. i'd reverse that. metal is fucking headache music. the dude was a fucking twat. trying to come up to me, even going so far as to listen to my stuff, in the car, and then like... basically... talking it down as best he could. i mean i think i won the guys respect by taking the time to even go and show him a track. now thats fucking balls. take a dude who literally talks your shit down, calls it "mathrock" and other shit. and then show him a track, and challenging him to take it, and apply his critical mind to it. and in the end, he found alot he liked. that makes me happy. because bottom line is, even when a critic comes along, and cant deny that there's goodness there, then bam, that's the goods. now to be surprised when someone picks apart your music for something it just isnt, then what can you do except tell them theyre reviewing a piss poor way. im not trying to be anything, music is just sound, it simply exists. if it moves you, great. but the point is, sound is just there, if you have an issue with it, walk away, so you cant hear it any longer. simple shit. math rock ... how about drunk fuck. what a fucking twat. trying tot alk down by shit. even going so far as to say mark e smith wasnt known by anybody. in the right circles sure, but half the bands you named me werent anywhere near as good as mark e smith. but at the end of the day its called belief. i believe in mark e smith. you might not. but dont go so far as to do the whole evangelizing tactic of trying to ply people from their beliefs. i feel like ive been attempted for a converting. and i shook it off, but i didn't like it. thats the thing. i believe my shit, you yours. try to proselytize? get ostrasized. dont fucking come up to me and try talking down my shit, and expect me to ever give you the oppertunity to do it again. you, sir, are a fucking twat. your music sucks. and you arent in a position to really interpret right from wrong. you dont get it right yourself. youre a sham of a band, and your music is a failed attempt. dont let your failing mind motivate you to try and give me criticisms on my art. i didnt go so far as to assume my own initial observations of your racket were true. truth is a heady thing. and when it comes to taste, to art, there are many tastes, and you, your taste just doesnt get satisfied by my racket. fair enough, seeing as how we dont have the same taste to begin with, at least when im writing the song. so... 2+2 buddy. simple shit. simple fucking shit.
death of the 88
so... basically. my favorite open mic in columbus has gone all to shit. like, basically the place is owned by james. he's a cool dude. then there's sky the bartender, and jimmy the open mic host. it used to be that james would host the open mic himself. he was a good host, and while he did host it, the open mic was good. in fact, great. the greatest open mic in columbus no less. but, alas, he's handed it over. I've spoken with him a few times and it generally boils down to having too many things to do and the like, you know the usual, small business owner and all that. so at the end of the day, the open mic got handed over to jimmy. now jimmy's calling over folks from the YMCA right across the street, a notorious drug spot and the like, and now 60-year old puking old guys and some of the worst hobo-style dressers in town populate the seats. its rowdier, its louder, its unfriendlier, and its not the open mic i came to love. basically... james had it way better. you would look forward to getting on the stage. but then like... jimmy took it over. we showed up tonight with guitar in hand, to see a few folks doing some hard rock stuff. they got off, jimmy got on. and so began the rotating chair of drummers. when too drunk to continue, after having played way too loud, jimmy got off the stage.
but instead of fixing the mic for us and calling us out on the mic, they kinda just left us on there to our own devices. in fact i wasnt quite sure we could even take the stage at first at all. jimmy had a few days earlier, maybe a week, came up to our studio session and demanded a ride back right at 8am, after we'd been at work for over 8 hrs and awake for over 24. it was unrealistic. and it wasnt even our town. we had before us a 1.5 hour drive. people in columbus need their own rides. getting yourself back to your house is something everyone needs to be able to do. there are busses, they run early, and at the first sign of a running bus, my girlfriend dropped them off and they walked. now i feared they were perhaps a little bristled from that experienced still today. but as it was jimmy was just drunk off his ass. sky also was kinda distant, the bar full, and i nearly felt sorry for the guy hah, with the filthiest bunch of crowd ive ever seen in that place. but the open mic has decayed into something no longer worthy or even filled with mere remnants of the former glory of James's open mic. its devolved into something much worse, unhealthily loud, with practical bums in the seats, jimmy and his own self promotion for his band, the lack of goodwill and camradery, and instead just vacant drinking.
james's open mic stood for something. it was a place where musicians could come, sit comfortably, get a half off special on drinks, and basically get a chance to get on stage, perhaps also with some sagely advice from the bar owner himself, james. not only this, but because there were never a huge number of players, you could sit on the stage multiple times, or for a long stretch. talking badly about any of the other musicians was always frowned upon, and a guy we used to see around there alot, kendal halman, ended up being asked to leave for more or less confronting my girlfriend and telling her how badly he thought she sounded. this of course by itself was the worst thing id heard a single person say at the bar, but it wasnt just that, it got worse. the guy with his friends who started jamming on anitas guitar. and then the group of people who asked us to play something we know. real fuckin rude. but as james made himself absent, his replacements and standins didn't enforce the rules. basically the crowd became rowdier, and even some of the musicians have begun insulting one another. not only that, the current host seems more intent on self promotion and drinking than putting on a show. that, and the mess of a crowd seems rougher, sleazier, and shadier than ever.
for isntance, a girl and a guy came out of the dudes restroom tonight. anita caught that. i was just surprised. that, and the 60 year old guy puking outside. or the lady inside asking us for 2 dollars for the band, reminding me alot of the bums on the street. and then the musicians themselves. we're talking 90s grunge cover after 90s grunge cover. only... i think instead of even dignifying it with the word 90s, or ... cover really... and instead i'll say this. jimmy is the new kendall. loud, annoying, depressing, causing scuffles, and just no good. if james was smart, he'd get rid of jimmy. as is, james refuses even to show up. yes, while his bar remains open, during his own open mic, he is ... nowhere to be found. james has abandoned the open mic to jimmy and his least favorite bartender, sky. now ive got a bone to pick, because james put himself out there, as a mentor, to a great many people, then took himself away. not only that, by removing himself, and replacing himself with a dude that didn't adhere to any of the typical things that james himself would have as a standard deal with the open mic, he basically left the entire scene of people who loved the old james-style open mic out to dry, moving them out the bar, and bringing in jimmy's crew, the ymca drug addicted downtown homeless vagabond crew.
now jimmy himself does alot of drugs, but not only that, he's got many friends that do too. thats his business, as in, i dont have a say in it, but, i do have a say with whom i associate with, and for those reasons, i'd certainly avoid the guy. we took him out to the studio and it was terrible. he just sat there blaring guitars through amps while we were listening through to our tracks. i mean it was just unprofessional. not only that, we were on the clock. if it isnt common sense not to do stupid shit while someones on the clock in a studio, i dont know what is. so that was a bad experience. and honestly, i just seem to have more bad than good experiences when it comes to musicians and music. like... gin for isntance, we drove to columbus for her in the first place, but when we got there, she flaked out. an hour and a half drive for nothing. then there was preston. he played guitar... but also played us. his friend... mine too, whose name escapes me, was just a stoner closet-gay guy more interested in getting laid than playing songs. chris was never really much of a musician. but bottom line is, ive gone down the line, and out of all those people, really just anita worked out. now... i realize that ive used my own numbers to say 5,000 is about right to meet if you want 50 good friends.
the same probably holds true for musicians. youve got to meet alot of them to really take stock of who rocks who sucks and also to generally find yourself enough cool people to do what youre trying to. its just a matter of getting out there, sticking with it, and achieving your goals. thats it bottom line really. its a numbers game and we didnt even try to roll the die. but the 88 was the best open mic. and then there was like... the jimmy thing, so its no longer visitable. so andymans is the best. and then i'd say... thirsty ear is up there. those are the two worth visiting i'd say. its a shame because so many of these places close down, or have very good reasons not to go. here's an idea though. get ons tage, @ an open mic, after securing a gig somewhere in the city. have printed papers to hand out, get a friend or 2 to hand 'em out while you play. do like every open mic that week. youll get maybe 10 people to show up to your show that week hah. might be a good way to do it. but jimmy definately had the job go to his head. like his life seems empty beyond the whole open mic host role. so i guess its good he has it. but its sad that basically he puts on such a bad show. as an open mic host he sucks. as a person, he's mildly interesting, like most confusing things are, but in the end, boring.

thoughts on downloading music:
so there's the exposure factor. i can't tell you how many artists i've gotten ahold of solely through the internet. from first discovering them, to then hunting down the album, to finding the artist website / photographs / tour information. this is all online. but if you then take a step back, yeah, there's last.fm, there's also bittorent, and perhaps even direct-download blogs, as well as music-sites that offer free mp3's for people to download. there's multiple sources granted, but what's the difference between tracks that are deemed alright by the artist to be released, and then other things that're essentially basically there to fucking, like... just be there. not with permission, just there, because some guy ripped his cd, took those mp3's, and up'd 'em to a site. is this wrong? photographs are upped all the time. and yes whilst folks are not allowed to profit off of such photographs that essentially can be used but arent to be sold. you have such a thing as free-use, or... whatever... something like that... fair-use i think? decorating your home and the like with it. whats this then thing about suings for nearly a million when someone is perhaps using these files for fair-use terms, listening within the home and the like. aka, not for profit, not for distribution etc. most people download and let that be it. and then perhaps after they've been introduced to the artist via download, then they are interested enough to perhaps sponsor such an artist. another thing is, there's more supply than demand with the music industry today. overbloated, with decades worth of bands, singles, top 10s, etc, all competing for... tour sales and cd bucks. but bottom line is the average guy isn't going to support all of these artists. these laws just pull out figures out their ass when they claim such artists are just going to certainly make such an amount had the download not been done. lets be real, they dont advertize music enough to really say that they would have provided all that the sites currently do. fact is, most all the music i learn of i get through the net, mostly through last.fm, or the rare pitchfork / etc thing, perhaps in the past moreso, but i've found their writing style atrocious. but yeah, you have blogs, sites, most of which you wont bother readnig 'course if you haven't even heard of the artist, right? for me, it's the radio on last.fm that's the best way to get ahold of new artists, as they do a similar-art-radio thing that basically takes a given name and extrapolates all the similar sounding folk and gives you an unlimited playlist of 'em all. you can of course pick any one of the offered new ones and stick 'em on their own radio, further branching you out and slowly getting you aware of so many more artists. and of course whilst these trees do extend rather far, sometimes you just have to throw something off the wall in there, like perhaps bollywood or soemthing, so youre not constantly bombarded with say, freshfaced british white folk. heh. but yeah.
so given the downloads, are these prices that tend to be awarded to such companies worth it? i mean... a million bucks... really? is that due for perhaps what would have beenabout 40 bucks in the mall?
which brings me to my other point... airwaves. can someone claim that all airwaves are then subject to the rules of private company? i mean even in our own basements are we considered to be under jurisdiction of the RIAA? i dont think so. i feel that perhaps ,outside of say radio stations that're private entities with business agreements with the companies, and are granted their frequency by the regulatory committees of the local governments... and such... plus say the private broadcast companies on television such as mtv and the like, these guys all have relationships with the companies that make / manage / and produce music... so they're essentially taken care of as far as the companies go, but... are we all to appease such music companies in all fashions? are air waves of all types fair game for these music companies to come in and claim rights? are we no longer living free, but constantly under the umbrella of the RIAA? this is a strange circumstance. to me, if i listen to whatever i please in public space, or my own personal property, or even private property that grants me permission to do as i please in this manner, then i feel the RIAA has no place to barge in. its just like copying cd's, for friends, mixtapes and the like, or making cassettes of teh radio. people've always done it. and why make laws stopping people from doing what they naturally do? in the same way that we wouldn't outlaw food, why would we outlaw the copying, duplicating, and sharing of that which we find interesting. does a newspaper sue if its paper is shared amongst 2 or 3 families or friends? no. and in the same way, a music company should not sue if a cd is shared among three or four friends. and also similarly, if such a thing is done on a larger scale, say amongst 10 or 20 friends using a networking tool such as the internet. people who get together for the simple reason to share good music with one another, to fuel their appetites for good music, exposing their friends to music they may never normally be exposed to. its the free exchange one would expect in any sort of artistic community. but these laws seem to bar the right of these sorts of communities to even exist.
essentially these laws dont really exist in a way that gives proper accord to the people, and only to the corporate private entity. companies have rights, people do not. thats the simple lesson of today's current state of laws and lawsuits. this may change with time, if america continues to be a just place in spirit, as law catches up with tech, and people are again allowed to live free and happy. give people their rights back.

babyshambles shotters nations
here's why this record rocks. first of all major british nostalgia for me. like you listen, you can feel like a carefree kid walkin round england. thats what essentially i want to be. i mean how awesome would it be to just be roaming around england playing music and just chilling out and stuff. doherty shows us all how to do it. like the laid back delivery, yet poetic, i mean so laid back that he allows himself to intellectualize, the music thats just good to the core, cheery and generally upbeat, and i dont see whats so terrible about the guy honestly. people like to say he's like the devil incarnate, pointing to his drug use but honestly the work he does in his albums are so great that its just a refreshing offering especially when sharing space with that tight assed shit you often see being offered, in fact its a refreshing heterosexual offering of music, in an industry thats homo-centric in my eyes. nice to see a regular joe whose got a sunny disposition who just wants to rock out, and just go for walks watching the wind in the trees. thats kinda the disjointed, not quite belonging and kinda airey mysterious layabout that just has so much appeal to so many people. doherty rocks, and so does his music. its just clear. enjoy this shit. because its rarifiedly good.
major british nostalgia
i used to live in england, from the years 1986 to 1992, and from 1993 to 1995. im actually halfway down to visiting a friend whose vacationing in florida with his mum dad sister and brother. my mom dad and sister just got done visiting them and are mostly flown back. i have actually visited since i moved, i had a chance to se the house my father paid to have built. well my father and mother. and i remember playing in the sawdust. i just had fun with the little toy car in the sawdust. and then to see it falling to ruin was just hard on my 17 year old eyes. i had lived there many years, enjoyed it, and had always thought i'd be coming back, but really i never did. that was harsh for me, because in 1993 we did actually return, making me think the time in england was just a harsh blemish of a memory that wouldnt come back agani, and then when we did move back in 1995 it was like... i expected to go back home eventually, but i never did. so it was like, crazy stuff. so yeah. im sitting here now 23, having spent far too long in this place, just wanting to go back to what is essentially my home. i just need a method to go, and now that i have a girlfriend i need a way for her to go too. but its largely because of her that i could really see myself there, with her. its due to her that this is becoming possible.
you can feel like a carefree kid walkin round england
i used to be this kid. in 2007 and early 2008 i took numerous trips over to england a did just that, roamed aruond on my own ,on the streets, taking pictures, taking in the sights, teh scenery, and just generally enjoying myself, whilst taking around an acuostic, playing songs, and just enjoying feeling free and at home. thats essentially what lifes like back there. i did this, then i came back and decided i wanted to give college another try. in 08 fall i went to OSU and came home with a girl, something much better. so im now sitting here in virginia on the way to florida to visit sammy from blackburn and i wonder maybe i should give this doherty layabout british wanderer gig a try. because never has it seemed so alluring as now. with anita by my side things seem possible and maybe ill get to actually do this after being kept from it for so long. maybe ill finally get to be back home where i belong. because without it, im just a half person. i need to get back so i can live free, who gives a shit about racism, its always there, just avoid the bad bits, and do your thing. its possble to live there without getting murdered instantly. and for those who say stay, fuck that, you werent robbed from your cradle, you have no concept as to what this shits like. shove it up yer arse.
how awesome would it be to just be roaming around england playing music and just chilling out
very. i mean having my band out there, doing my thing, just being me, doing my art, maybe trying a degree, whatever i needed, i mean, thats what i want anyway, and then trying it out, seeing what i could do out there, the lands great, and i need to return to my home. its high time and im completely due. so nothing else really mattrs. so thats what im gonna do. im gonna go voer there and just say fuck it to here hah, because this's jsut a fuckig trip that's been shit a fuck, never enjoyed sightseeing anyway heh, and im just a fucking tourist here, time to go the fuck home. fuck yeah ;p. have some fish and chips and just walk down the country lane w/ an acoustic guitar. hah and yeah, for sure, teh best hting i picked up from OSU 08 was girlfriend he, way better than some crappy degree :P. so yeah. but anyway ive got a chick squeezing me so its time to go:P.

this ones seems interesting because back in the day i think i d/l'd some of his stuff in the days of kazaa, real fast rapper and all that, had kinda surprising skill with that, otherwise wasnt hardcore into them really. but yeah. something to keep an eye on.
new releases for the week of july 21
fiery furnaces
so they had that one song awhile ago. actually im thining of hot hot heat. nfc about these guys heh.
sugar ray
90s band, did good stuff. wonder how they'll turn out in '09.
new releases for the week of july 28
- nothing.
new releases for the week of august 4
circulatory system
i picked an album of these guys up whilst i was in my torrent phase, good shit and not memorable if i remember right.
modest mouse
solid release back in the early 2000s, a college record well played, i wasnt even into them that much but many of those songs off of that album are iconic to that era.
new releases for the week of august 11
the roots
now a band for a late-night show, their last album sucked, but they've always seemed more celebrity than musician anyway. might be interesting to check out.
patrick wolf
folk, if im thinknig right, i checked him out, didnt like it much, but it did get sent to me through the grape vine.
queen latifah
i dont know what she's doing releasing an album, but lets see how this goes.
new releases for the week of august 18
brendan benson
acoustic poppery if i remember right. probably sucks, but perhaps worth checking out.
lil wayne
rap, nausiating to listen to, but might be worth checking out. supposedly most prolific / up and come-er of our day.
third eye blind
old 90's band slinging out new shit. might be worth a check out.
nathan maxwell and the original bunny gang (flogging molly bassist)
flogging molly elicits irish imagery, for that reason alone might be worth checking out for the irisih - punk culture clash that might ensue.
new releases for the week of august 25
arctic monkeys
british indie-pop group that i never got into, but inevitably was forced to stomache, as often is the case with music. its out there, and you can't help but come in contact with alot of it.
collective soul
their album dosage still kinda gets played around from time to time on my pc, its a high one, not the greatest i have but one of the ones that've stuck with me a long long while. might be worth a check out.
mariah carey
i remember in the 90s when she would do some of the pop videos that'd run in the summer. i'm curious as to what she's up to now.
imogen heap
she had the song hide and seek. for that reason alone this is probably worth checking out hah. otherwise, i have no clue what this will be like. but hopefully if there's more hide and seek to be found, it'll rock.
matisyahu
jewish hasidic rapper, never got too into his stuff, but he does seem to get progressively better. i feel a penchant to want to like the guy, but just cant, feeling again like this's a matter of someone with more celebrity than talent. so yeah... probably will check out, probably will disappoint.
mellowdrone
this's something i'm excited to see. these guys, and the founding member was a kid who i would catch on grainy net vids back in the early 2000s, before his band was as big as it is now. he'd do like... jonathan bates was his name, all these loop pedal setups, with drums and everything, it just inspired me immensely to do the same thing, so i did, never really to his full extent, but maybe i will take it just that bit further. either way, crazy dude. willie nelson
'course when talking about this guy you think weed, and a big fucking beard, but the dude had like, clean shaven face n shit back in his early days. go look it up, you might be surprised. anyhow, he's one of those old productive bastards that just wont go away, im not sure im hugely into what he does, but his celebrity and persona are certainly welcome characters to the music industry today. so for that reason i might check it out.
smokey robinson
simply for the name check, and no other reason. potentially surprising, or perhaps disappointing, i go into this with no expectations.
new releases for the week of september 1st
whitney houston
so, she's back, after drugs and all else. lets see what she can do.
the used
name check purposes only. nfc as to the sound or anything. no expectations.

september 11th
jayz
heh. what a putz for releasing shit on sept 11. trying to use the day as a marketing ploy for his album. lovely eh? for someone who supposedly quit rap too. ah well. might check it out, probably wont like.
september 14th
muse
this might rock. last one did. theyve gotten better in my eyes, to my ears, over the years, and thogh some might disagree, their latest was in my opinion their most listenable. previous offerings just gave me a headache heh. so we'll see how this goes.
new releases for the week of september 15th
beastie boys
classic rap outfit, white, releases new album? might be worth checking heh. althogh its worth noting ive never loved a beastie boys album, usually hated them.
new releases for the week of september 22nd
sean "diddy" combs
so puff daddy releases another eh? i cant say ive really ekpt up with his career since the godzilla cd, before or since, so nfc if i'll even check it out, but who knows, miracles do happen. probably'll suck, but no expecations.
madonna
hah, well, i liked her spy who shagged me soundtrack. otherwise im not a huge old school madonna fan, but then she seems to be able to adapt fairly well. referencing her later vids and stuff, generally poppy, and she's also 50. interesting stuff, probably the female mick jagger.
pearl jam
well, never liked 'em, not much at least, 'til i did some research on grunge-era 90s, the era i entered the states. whilst in home britpop was in full swing, i of course msised that fully a) not being into music and b) not being in the country. instead i got nirvana, creed, & co. and so these guys are a vestige of that era, ever continuing in those styles, of nihilstic moans and gutteral belly-aching. probably won't like, but probably will listen.
new releases for the week of september 29th
alice in chains
another grunge era band, this one however with little direct contact. no clue, most likely wont check out.
nelly furtado
interesting to hear she's spitting out more. ive kept tabs on her, and many friends have liked her. young latino singer whose done some good stuff. no diea how this'll be. lets just say if it's real... dancy? it'll suck. but if it's more... sing song? then yeah... might be good. we'll see.
paramore
alright, so they rock. just a sweet band, and also, probably the rightful heir to the whole... avril lavigne... thing. she's actually got the talent and all that, so she's more deserving of the fame etc. anyhow... this band actually excites me, so i'll definately be out to check out their next offering.
lynyrd skynyrd
old school rock band spits out another. not a huge fan, never was, but then, i have played sweet home more than a few times. who knows, maybe ill look. then most likely regret it.
barbra streisand
surprisingly, i like her. like... you'd think i wouldn't. but yeah, id o. she's got a charisma & personality that sells her shit, and since she's dated it's also novel having older style shit sung at you. might check itout.
new releases for the week of october 6th
air
hah, well, used to be fans with some huge air fans back in the day. me, i'd listen to one particular song. how does it make you feel. a million times. so i dont know. that particular song basically elicits shitloads of memories from college. whether or not i'll check it out remains to be seen, largely their work disappoints me, but that one song did kinda do something for me. might be a one hit wonder? who knows.

sting
hah well, cameo in uh, lock stock and two smoking barrel aside, the majority of what i know fo this guy is from docu's. yeah, i haven't really checked his albums out, but the docu's were entertaining at least. he's read poetry, and then there's the one about hsi band in the states touring. so yeah... seems like an interesting celebrity, but music wise... not so much my taste from what i've seen and heard. might check it out though for lock stock's sake heh.
paramore & mellowdrone records coming out within three months.
